IS WORRYING A SIN?

Worry according to Oxford is to “feel
or cause to feel anxious or troubled about actual or potential problems”. Worrying
is therefore an exercise that involves the mind and can also transcend to the
physical. Expressions of worrying can be found on long drawn faces, anxiety
with physical expression like a sigh or even an outright burst of spoken
words.
However, in the natural, this expression
may be permitted, but in the spiritual it is not acceptable. God may lead us
through some situations that we are not able to give explanation for and He
wants us as obedient children to remain in control of the inner feelings that
torment us. While it occurs, He knows that it will be for a season, therefore
we should just be calm.
But man has 3 parts – namely;
the body, soul and spirit. Our body is the physical being with which we
interact with people, it includes features such as the eyes, hands, mouth, ears
and legs, to mention a few. Our internal body organs include; the heart, liver,
kidneys, lungs and intestines amongst many.
The body wants to satisfy the flesh all the time in contrast to what
the spirit wishes. The body craves for beautiful clothes, expensive shoes,
perfumes with beautiful fragrances, watches and so on. All of these in
themselves are not bad, but what are the motives for wearing or adorning them,
you may want to find out?
The spirit is intangible, but we can use it to have communication with
the Spirit of God. The spirit is always willing to do the will of God, but
there is a war between what we want based on fleshly desires and what the
spirit wants us to do in obedience to God’s will.
Our soul consists of our mind/intellect, our will and our emotions.
Our soul enables us exhibits our emotions such as fear, hatred, feelings,
imaginations etc. That is why we often ask why we carry out soulish activities
especially when they are rooted in negativity.
Romans 6: 12-14, states;
12. Therefore,
do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its
lusts.
13. And do
not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin,
but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments
of righteousness to God.
14. For
sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under
grace.
The flesh must be brought under subjection to the will of the Spirit.
If we do not know that grace is available through the death of Christ to all
who believe on His name, then we will be subject to the flesh. We are
encouraged to walk in the
Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh (Gal 5:16).
Worrying might lead to an early death because what we fear all the
time often comes to pass. (Please study Romans 8). Worrying for the children of
God is an indication that we are not walking by faith. Worrying leads to
anxiety and anxiety makes us vulnerable to committing sin. As children of God
who want to remain obedient, we must cast worrying away, far from our hearts
and minds. We must invite the Holy spirit to be our guide and always depend on
him for direction.
